love’s extravagance

Water Lily With Water Drops
the extravagance of love

Luke 12:27 “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.”

I have been pondering a lot on something.  It never ceases to amaze me how Jesus loves to put His beauty, His displays of love in often obscure, hidden places.

Consider the lilies.  They are stunning displays of Love’s extravagance. I could never get tired of looking at them.  Just as they are adorned in splendor that made Solomon’s wardrobe pale in comparison, so shall we be loved and cared for, so shall we be adorned in garments of grace.

Lilies of the fields, lilies of the valleys, lilies of the waters- unlikely emblems of another realm but yet.  What does Jesus call Himself even, but the lily of the valley (SS 2:1).  I have been feeding my soul on His beauty and on the goodness of one who would put such extravagant and often delicate displays of grace in so many hidden, unlikely places.

In 1996, when I was still in university I began to “consider the lilies” and the result was a series of poetic reflections.  I guess like Monet I have been captured by their grace ever since.   This is the first time these poems have fully been released.

Wild lily
unlikely grace

lily of the field

lily of the field
that dances on the wind
with petals held high to the sun.
splendor not attained by kings is yours.
your crown is beauty,
joy’s delight.
no need to hide behind
fashions of the night.
sheer simplicity
essence of undying love.
passion from pure hearts
with strong, sure roots
that seek the living water of truth,
thirst for righteousness
and reach deep into the rock
unmoved.

lily of the field
would my life reflect
your simple self,
would my roots reach deep
for truth and right,
would my petals seek the
son:
radiant beauty would be
my crown
and I would grow to be
a lily
in the field of my king.
and someday my petals
even brush
his robe.

waters of grace

lily on waters of grace
you dance with the wind
splendor not attained by kings is yours.
your crown is beauty,
hope’s delight.
hidden on the waves of night
extravagant love
passionate purity
with roots that seek
truth in mystery
reaching deep
to breathe

life in the unseen places.
light in darkest night
love in harshest wasteland
would my song be heard
above the storms
would my rest become my fight

would my life reflect
your royalty
my roots reach deep for truth
would my petals unfold to love
yes LOVE
take me deeper into you!
radiant reflections of glory
would be my gown
authority from intimacy
my crown
and I would grow to be
a lily
on the grace waters
of my king.
just by being
I am
the one who
has captured
his gaze

fragrant beauty from the hidden places

in the valley

in the valley
she grows
petals moved and caressed
by invisible breath
splendor not attained by kings
is yours.

simplicity
hidden love
that releases
fragrant beauty in the unseen
places

in the valley you grow
in the shadowlands
you thrive
in the darkness, in the secret
you shine.

lily of the valley
would my life reflect your grace
would my roots reach deep
into unseen streams
my life be found in love’s
embrace.
in the valley
I would grow to be
a lily
waiting for my king.
even among thorns
even among wars
I sing.
